MEDIA STUDIES EXAM
Media exam
1. One way in which mise en scene is used to create meaning
is the brightness. The meaning is that it is a very lonely place, and that it
is a very mysterious place, and that it was to be very quiet. An example of this
is when the inspector is walking around the place where he fights the man with
the fire metal, it is very creaky and quiet there. Another way mise en scene
creates meaning is by the clothing that they are wearing. This creates meaning as you can tell that the women is very slick and powerful, with her bright and
clean leather black jacket. Also, because the inspector is very calm and relaxed in his casual suit.
2. One way in which traditional gender is challenged is that
woman can sometimes be powerful. This is shown when the woman sits her down.
This part is towards the end of the passage when she find a white board that
has a map of England on it. This shows that she is powerful because she is
bossing the inspector around which is very unusual, and shows that she has dominance over other people. This concludes that in the
movie tradition can be shown by her power, when she takes over the role of
being the person who controls the scene.
Another way in which gender tradition is challenged is when
she is pinned and tied against the wall. This makes us feel as a viewer that
women were not as powerful as men back in those days, and it is very different
today. This part is shown when the tall and slick inspector beats off the
peasant worker, and then walks over to the tied up women. This shows the men
have power over women because it represents that women are tied up and do not
have the strength to beat off someone, as he casually unties her. This conforms to society back then because men used to have a lot more power over
women.
Another way in which gender is challenged in the extract is
when the inspector compares the woman to a horse. This is shown when she is
tied up and he says 'this is supposed to go on a horse y'know.' This is a great
representation of how women were treated because he is making fun of her and comparing her
to a horse and that she fits in it. This draws the conclusion that women were
also called names and verbally abused, which further fits the stereotype
back then.
In conclusion, this extract challenges the stererotype of
gender strongly because of the amount of times a gender stereotype of the 60s happened back then. However, it does show the power of women at times in the extract.
3. Cultural and social contexts have a large influence on
the message given out. One reason why this may happen is because people can
relate to it. People relating to what is happening in the film brings the
message across massively because they know that it is happening in the real
world and so the message it brings is stronger. For example, a black guy could
relate and understand the message too, when Ryan was being abused on the beach. This can also relate to other
audiences as they can not relate, but get a strong message across due to the
fact that it is influenced on the current stereotypes and that it needs to
stop. It also holds a lot more value because it sends a message that we should
never do things like this again, and sends a message to the racist community
that we need to stop this behaviour, and that it is completely wrong to do this
type of stuff.
4. One way in which reggae music is represented is by the
colour. The colours that mainly represent reggae music are green, yellow, and
red, which are shown in the extract, especially in the central splash. Another
way reggae music is represented is by the man in the centre, the way the
brightness is laid out on how and how relaxed he is, with also a flavour of
joy. Another way in which reggae music is represented is by the black and white
colours at the bottom, representing how reggae music originated from.
5. For extract 1, one way in which they try and connect with
pop fans is by having many different colours, to stand out. For example, in the
central splash there is red yellow and green to represent pop and reggae
chilled music, which appeals to pop fans. This draws the conclusion that joy
and fun is one of the main targets for MOJO magazines. Another way in which
MOJO are willing to go far to connect with pop fans is by showing that the man
in the centre has power. This is shown firstly because he is in front of the
mojo text, showing that he is dominant. Another way in which it is shown is the
lighting being fully focused on him, showing that he is the centre of attention. Another way in which power is shown is by how tall he is in the article. This
is shown by how he covers up a lot of the magazine with his height and
dominance over you. This shows that power is influenced a lot to connect with
audiences in this article. Another way in which MOJO goes far to connect with
audiences is by having a very out-there cover. By this, I mean that there are a
lot of things all coming at you at once, which shows a very fun vibe and makes
you want to look at everything. This draws the conclusion that MOJO are using
lots of different text fonts and colours to make it fun to connect with pop
fans. Another way in which MOJO connect to the pop audience is by having words
such as ‘explosion’ and ‘revolutionary’, to try and appeal to more audiences.
This draws the conclusion that they try and make it appeal to younger audiences
slightly more by using these more ‘kiddish’ words.
For extract 2, one way in which the Strad try and connect
with classical fans is how simple and basic it is. This appeals to the target
audience because of how chilled out it is, and how the font is all the same and
there is not much on there. This draws the conclusion that classical music fans
enjoy more chilled magazines and want it to be more basic. Another way in which
simpleness is shown in the article is by her pose. The central splash of her
facing towards the side with her head turned whilst holding a violin makes it
seem a lot more relaxed than a big guy standing directly in front of you with
colours flying all over the place. Also, the lack of colours makes it seem a
lot more relaxed and calmer. This draws the conclusion that The Strad use less
colours and a short and sweet cover to cover their range of target audience. Another way in which The Strad connect with audiences is by having a
pull quote. This pull quote is motivational, and it fits the target audience
because there are people who don’t like playing and instrument and might quit,
but may be heard out by her, and continue reading the article. This draws the
conclusion that the target audience is also for people who like being motivated
and challenged.
In conclusion, there is a massive contrast in target
audience between these two people. One of them is very funky and enjoys looking
down at people, yet whilst still being chilled and relaxed, therefore having
the target audience of the pop industry. The other one is a lot more soothing
and has a very 30s style to it, therefore having the target audience of the
classical music industry

7. One advantage of publishing in print is that you can sell
it in different stores. Despite being more expensive, it is a big advantage
because more people will see it, and it is a much better way to get your brand
out there if you are new, or if you are big and are looking for sales from
maybe the elderly. One advantage of printing online is that it costs a lot
less. This is very useful because you can spend your money on promotions and
improving your articles in general, and also it is a lot more modern.
8. One way in which cultural and political contexts is by
showing things that happen in the world at the moment. For example, in the
skybox there are things related to lockdown such as workouts at home, and best
cooking recipes when you are bored at home. This draws the conclusion that
this fits the current social contexts very well. Another way in which coultural
context is shown is that the most trending topics are in the front. In this
example, the George Floyd situation is in the central splash because it is very
important and trending. This is also a good opportunity to interact with
audiences because it lets people have their opinion on different social media
platforms e.g twitter to further engage audiences into The Observer. In
addition, cultural context is also shown because it shows the contrast in views
between two different people who live different lives via the picture in the
central splash. It provides good entertainment because people may have sympathy
and are able to see what people are talking about online.
Another way in which it is shown in the front page in the
main headline saying Cummings has broken the covid rules. This is a good
example of this because it shows them talking about the trending topic of covid-19, which has affected everyone's life at this point and you will see good
social interaction because lots of people will be talking about it. It is also
political because it allows the people to understand what is going on at the
moment. This also provides entertainment because people who like the story are
encouraged to talk about it with friends and people may have contrasting opinions on the situation.
