How is Mise En Scene Created in the Opening of Cuffs?
Mise en scene is created in the first minute of the
film via the cuts between Ryan (one of the main characters) going towards a
nude beach to break up a fight, and the chief officer talking about how we represent our country and gain respect as police officers. The main setting is set
within the first few minutes of the show. In the beginning, we are introduced by
a bird's eye view of Brighton and the beach to set the main opening scene. In
the background, there is rock music playing whilst Ryan and Jake are being
introduced. The speech Chief Officer Vikors gives correlates to the opening
scene were Ryan is going through a difficult time as an officer. As he talks
about respect and standing for our country, Ryan is being beaten up, making him
look like a newbie to the job of police officer, and looking a bit pathetic too.

ReplyDeleteYou haven't copied all of the question down, Matt: it was about analysing SOUND as well, but you have indeed included sufficient examples in your answer by referring to the diegetic sound (and sound bridge) of the chief superintendent talking at the passing out ceremony. State explicitly what MEANING is being made: comic and ironic meaning as the 'respect' mentioned by the chief super is not shown by the public to Ryan who is subjected to abuse and even has his nose punched. Other sounds include realistic police vehicle sounds like sirens and wheel spins creating urgency. Mise-en-scene comments could include references to the drunken stag party and the naturists: the police's job is shown to be physically challenging and unpredictable.
The most important point to take from my marking is that you must show WHAT MEANING IS MADE.
