 MUSIC VIDEO 3/12/19

We have started studying our two set texts in class.

Wheatus Teenage Dirtbag

Avril Lavigne Sk8er Boi

This is where you can see what we study in music videos on our blog.

PREP Watch the two videos again, looking in particular at differences in representation, camerawork and editing.

Your prep is to identify how the two videos differ in their representation, camerawork and editing. Pick only one example of each.

Representation

These two music videos are very contrasting.  In sk8ter boy, the girl seems to be a sort of punky Rockstar, who is a completely careless teenager who thinks she can do whatever she wants.  The music video represents Avril to have easily snatched a boy from another girl, and she intends to be cocky and brag about it.  She tries to give the impression she lives a fun, hands off life which is very easy for her. However, in Teenage Dirtbag, it is very different.  In this video, the main character of the music video is presented as a very lonely and depressed character who gives the impression his whole life he has never had any say in anything.  The song shows him talking about his high school crush, Noel, who is presented as the popular girl who all the boys want to go out with.  The camera follows the story of his dream and his obstacles to get there.

Editing

One of the main componets that the editing has is slow motion, to represent a scene that the main character feels very sad in and wants the audience to stop and think what you feel.  It mainly slows down when he sees Noel.  This slow motion represents him wanting her more than anything else in the world, and that she is his everything.  In sk8ter boi, the camera is very quick in between scenes to give off more of a Rockstar vide like shaking head, jumping around etc.  It seems more like an action movie thriller than a music video in my opinion, because of how fast paced the scenes are taken.  The chaos represents a concert/gig theme for the music video.

Camerawork

The camera in teenage dirtbag is very slow paced and more realistic.  It tries to represent the daily life of a high school loser.  It is also very steadily filmed to make it more of a slow paced song, apart from the beat drop which the camera cuts are very fast and smoothly shown.  In sk8ter boi, the music video is seen as a massive concert more than a video.  It has a very energetic feel to it, and the scenes are very quickly put together to give a huge vibe of energy
