MAGAZINE PREP - WRITE ABOUT REPRESENTATION AND LANGUAGE

For my magazine, I have chosen a June 2020 Queen magazine. The main vibe we are meant to grasp from the central splash is that it is a very dark and a sinister kind of band. In the central splash there is a class font with 'Queen' on it, telling us maybe that they are not a big and fisty rock band. There is also a pull quote saying 'we are special boys',  telling their audience that they are an invincible band that cannot be touched. There is also a triple deck layer of quotes at the bottom right, with celebrities expressing their thoughts on Queen and how hard they work.

The representation of the cover portrays Queen as something other then just a band. They are shown as a mysterious group of people that could be anyone doing anything, like villains in comic books. All their clothes are covered, they are all wearing black eyeliner and the lighting is driven towards their face exposing nothing else. This makes us think as an audience that they are a very stylish and dark band. Their facial expressions are all the same, with them seemingly staring directly at the camera like they are staring into our soul, ready to strike at any point. This further influences their mysterious and clueless vibe. Their positions are fairly similar except the band member at the top seems to overpower the other three in the band, possibly implying that he is the main leader. The main colours are black and white to resemble darkness and maybe power.

THE AVENGERS 10 MARKRER

Today we watch the opening 7 minutes of our tv drama text on Clickview and relate what we learned last lesson about:

  • audience pleasures (why audiences enjoyed watching it). What is their relationship like?
  • how Emma Peel is presented (including why her representation reflects the 1960s when it was made). Listen to what she reveals about herself.
  • how John Steed is presented (including why his representation reflects the 1960s when it was made). How does he come across?

After the introduction to the characters and producers of The Avengers, there is a black screen, that briefly increases in opacity towards the main shot, which is a shot at the beach slowly panning over to the sea. In the sea there is a black mysterious object we can see drifting toward the shore of the sea. This creates a sense of mystery and interest as the audience wants to see what/who the floating object is. After this, the camera has a slow zoom towards the object, and fairly quickly something pops up from the object, leading us as an audience to realise that it is some sort is rusty bag. This further creates a scene of interest and focus as the audience are curious to see what it is. As the bag gets closer to shore, there is a shot that zooms in on a man's feet walking towards the shore. The shot quickly pans up towards the person in the bin bag's head. As the bag is ripped open, we can see a formally dressed, posh young man pop out of it, acting as if what he did was completely normal as he whips out an umbrella. This creates a scene of humour and confusion as the audience find it silly that a handsome young man is dressed in a bin bag and thinking nothing happened, but also makes the audience think, why was he doing that. This makes us as an audience want to keep watching as the mystery side of this initial shot has drawn us in. A short while after this scene we are shown a doorbell in which Steed uses his umbrella to ring with. We get a quick shot to a giant eye opening up and Emma's voice immediately speaking after it. This represents Emma very well, because by the way she dresses with her leather suit and her modern furniture she wants technology to be as futuristic as possible in her flat, as she is a very up to date person. This also creates a very good form of entertainment for the audience back then, as they may be confused or amazed with the future of their technology.

After the door is opened, Steed is greeted by Emma practising fencing with her face mask on with her slick suit. Steed starts trying to create sexual tension by giving her instructions on what to do, and claims it is 'friendly advice.' This creates a good tension with the audience as they like the relationship they have together and their strong bond. Shortly after, Emma tells Steed that his coffee is 'over there' which shows us as an audience she does not want to be put down like that just because she is a woman, which was the stereotype back in the 60s. This makes us feel as an audience she is a very powerful women. Once they start fencing, Emma says she wrote an article for 'the science weekly'.   This shows her income and that she is very intelligent, which will further make us feel the connection with her as an audience.

MUSIC VIDEO RESEARCH

 MUSIC VIDEO RESEARCH

My top one:

NF - LET YOU DOWN

My possible songs that I have decided I could go for are:

Ball w/o: 21 Savage

Star shopping: lil peep

Tunnel of Love: ILYTommy

Ruthless: Lil Tjay

High up: Arizona Zervas

Deja Vu: Qiante

Duva: LAROI

My inspiration for my music video: KSI - Killa Killa

I have chosen Killa Killa for my inspiration because of the Sci Fi scenery.  I really like the effects used and the futuristic scenes make the music video really cool on a whole, however I would like to add my own twist to it.

My main idea is me being in a woods walking by myself all alone, and I slowly gain courage to be myself and I set fire to myself, and bring myself powers. The way it is going to work is I feel alone and out of myself, and I see something in myself, and put all my effort in, and give powers to myself.

RYAN AND JAKE INTRO - CUFFS PREP

How we introduced to Ryan and Jake (10 marks).

The introduction of Ryan begins within the first few seconds of cuffs.  Ryan is currently on a job to stop people at a nude beach from fighting, and he is getting out of his police car towards the centre of action. Whilst this is happening, a chief officer is speaking about how we represent our country through the badge we wear.  This makes the scene ironic because as he is saying this, Ryan is failing at his job. He is making a small amount of progress breaking up the people at the scene, but realises he is no match for them and follows the correct protocol by asking for backup.  As a one man team he does a reasonable job at stopping the fight, but in the end he gets put on the floor by a punch in the face. You can tell he has experience because he was following the correct protocols in the beginning scene, and he has a good understanding of the officer terminology that we often hear.

As I said earlier, a chief officer is talking about how we need to stand up for our country and how we hold the police badge with pride, whilst Ryan is losing a battle. This officer is holding a speech to introduce his brand new additions to his team of officers, one of those people being Jake.  He calls Jake to come up and join the police force. As he does this, you can tell that he is very confident, because he feels he has made his father proud. He also has a slight grin on his face, which shows that he is looking down at the police officers who are next to him whilst he gets his moment of glory. However, this will later show to be  inexperience as Jake is shown to be very unprepared for the day to day life as an officer, shown by his lack of skill and leadership. This is because as the chief's son, he gets slightly biased treatment compared to the other officers.

MISE EN SCENE - CUFFS PREP 5 MARKER

How is Mise En Scene Created in the Opening of Cuffs?

Mise en scene is created in the first minute of the film via the cuts between Ryan (one of the main characters) going towards a nude beach to break up a fight, and the chief officer talking about how we represent our country and gain respect as police officers. The main setting is set within the first few minutes of the show. In the beginning, we are introduced by a bird's eye view of Brighton and the beach to set the main opening scene. In the background, there is rock music playing whilst Ryan and Jake are being introduced.  The speech Chief Officer Vikors gives correlates to the opening scene were Ryan is going through a difficult time as an officer. As he talks about respect and standing for our country, Ryan is being beaten up, making him look like a newbie to the job of police officer, and looking a bit pathetic too.
