NF - LET YOU DOWN

Brief 3 - an original music video to accompany a hip hop music track aimed at an audience of 14-18 year olds

Statement of Intent

I have covered the hip hop track Let You Down, by NF. The language of my music video follows music video conventions: I have a mix of performance (where my singer lip synchs the words, addresses the audience directly through eye contact and performs in role) and interpretation of the narrative (in which the lyrics are acted out). I also follow another really central music video convention of cutting to the beat, which means that the pace changes dramatically and therefore the speed of my singer’s actions and my editing. This song relates to a younger audience of teenagers because the lyrics are relatable; someone letting their partner down, and wanting forgiveness for mistreating someone who wanted to treat well. 

The narrative I have in my music will be related to the lyrics. It will convey the story of a young boy texting his partner, saying they need to take a break. I convey this by adding texts on the screen as each text is played out, whilst cutting between me passionately lip syncing the lyrics to the chorus 'I'm sorry that I let you down'. This expresses my feelings and that I need to find a way to escape this bubble I am in, in my life. I have text bubbles popping out of the screen to the side instead of showing my phone. I show the stress of 'the voices in my head' using many different camera shot types. I represent the downwards spiral of frustration and stress through the edit of the clock being in a time lapse.

I am in the snow with white and black clothes on because it represents darkness and in a lonely place. My singer wears stereotypical teen clothes (tracksuit and hoodie clothes). I show my stress when I do a shot of me opining my laptop, viewing an essay. Whilst doing this lip syncing in the snow, and behind my green screen (which is a shot of the woods), I'm doing the essay and struggling to do it, and continuously put my head down disappointingly. When the main beat hits, there is a 2 second clip of my body shattering into pieces using special effects, to represent how I want to disappear.

01 CUFFS EXTENDED ANALYSIS

The opening scene of Cuffs uses diegetic sound and this is used to create authenticity. The intercom is used to show a one on one conversation to create tension, as Ryan is about to start to fight a crime. The police sirens are used to signify what type of show it is, that is a police procedural, as police sirens has connotations of crime and drama. The non-diegetic sound (the soundtrack) begins the scene with pace, and a fast and quick introduction that brings momentum to the opening scene. Percussion is used to show that you are in a dramatic scene, as it is fast and loud. The superintendent's speech creates a sound bridge over the main scene of Ryan, and the scene that quickly follows on the beach. In this scene, we meet the different social groups that are typical of Brighton, or that are made out to be typical.

Cuffs reflects the social and historical contexts of its time. Modern Brighton is shown as having diversity of different social groups. There are different genders, friends, ethnic backgrounds and races. It is very modern in terms of how different social groups are represented; having a female police chief, and a black and gay officer. A social group of family is shown in the opening scene with the beach, when a family is all together nude fighting. Also, when Vikors is giving his speech the group of co-workers are all aligned standing with each other, congratulating Jake on his newest promotion. In the course of this episode, the speech is challenged and he is always tested as he does not always earn the respect from the public that he usually gets. For example, the scene on the beach when Ryan is beaten up, when Benson threatens Ryan to kill him with a screwdriver. Also, the lack of support from public, with the amount of people that commit crimes and do not submit evidence. 

For Blumler and Katz, audiences use media to gratify needs. For example, audience pleasure comes from empathising and identifying with characters or content represented in them.  Getting to know the officers as fully rounded characters, with whom we can empathise can offer these types of audiences these types of entertainment. We learn that Jake is a very friendly person towards society. By opening up to Ryan about himself about how he is gay and is a police officer, shows that he wants to make changes in Brighton. This shows how much of a humble person he is, it also appears he is a brave person. Ryan is very angry with Jake because he believes he only got into the police team because of his father. In addition, he messes up his first job as an officer, which makes Ryan even more angry. We learn that Ryan is bemused by Jake as he has no practice in the policing world. Ryan feels that he has earned his job and where he has got to today. In contrast, Jake has had the fast way ticket to his career, and Ryan can recognise that.

When we are near the end of the 3rd chapter, a pleasant Asian man cycles into a local shop where he proceeds to get stabbed with a screwdriver by a group of 3 people. In the store music is playing that is fast paced and trendy. As soon as the racists enter the story and we get the Asians reaction ship, it immediately switches to dark and scary music. The music gradually gets more intense and shaky as the racists proceed to corner the Asian and stab him. This then draws tension to the viewer as they are aware of what they are about to see. As soon as he is stabbed, it switches straight to a kid having his day, drowning the scary music as he is laying in a pool of blood.

The camera work shows in which way the bully approaches Amit, trying to pick out his curry from the shop for his family and this therefore makes us feel scared and shivered by him. In addition, it can cause us to feel anxious about what he will do to him. It also does not expose his full body, so we are not aware what has happened to him and we want to find out, but the way he falls makes us realise he is dead. also the way that the camera follows his body as it gradually drops to the ground. The camerawork building up to it is slow paced and slightly smooth, to help build tension for the viewers at home. The camerawork is used specifically so it does not reveal the attack that happens. This is because these types of violent crimes cannot be shown before 9pm, because it is a family friendly show. The camerawork shows the racists slowly moving down the aisle, revealing each one as they corner Amit from escaping, which builds more tension for the viewer.

When you are policing in a modern world, you are required to put up with a lot of hatred from the public as they see you with disgust and many people do not trust the police. This is shown in the start of chapter 5 when the good guys go up to students when they on their study period who are bursting around the area and hurt the police when they go up to them. The police may have not helped them in the past so they may not be relentless to help them in the future. We see this towards the end of chapter 5 when a guys shop is vandalised and it takes the police 3 days to respond; therefore when his son is a main witness in an assault case, he does not allow him to be interviewed. This portrays the policing system as corrupt and they do not believe it in.

At the end of the extract, there is a crucial scene in which Jo is with St. Vickors, and they handle a press briefing with the racists that stabbed the Asian. Us, as an audience, learn about as much as her as a person, as we understand how she handles her professional life. We can see this in the two shot when we focus on Jo eyeing superintendant Vickors during their press conference. The body language is shown with a close up shot of their hands together, and it slowly zooms upwards, and Jo's eyes are focused on his wedding ring, and she snaps out of it and looks up instantly with a formal and professional smile. Also, when the word 'whiteness' is spoken, she immediately drops expression, because she knows that is not going to happen with the Asian's family. We see Jo at the TV screen performing in front of a camera. She is very sympathetic for the crime that was committed, as she says 'he had his whole life ahead of him'. We also can notice that Jo is very brave, when she enters the racist's home before back up comes, in case she gets in any trouble.

Technological convergence is where 2 different forms of technology form to create a brand new outcome. A good example of this is the smartphone.

Channel surfing is the action of switching through different channels on yur remote control on your TV, to find a channel that tailors your taste.

One example of creating brand loyalty is by having a production value that is high quality. As a result of this, people will see your companies work and recognise that if they are watching your work, it is guaranteed to be high quality. Another way is to have a good storyline that interests viewers. This leads to a grappling and higher end watch, that viewers will enjoy more. The final way is by hiring famous actors for the fans' sake. By this, it means that if your lead actor is a fan favourite by many, they may watch it just for the purpose of him being in it.

A very long waited programme that has a lot of hype built around it.

The BBC have to offer good production value, unique and well built programmes that are guaranteed to grip viewers that are into a type of series they are watching from the BBC. They are also required to show UK culture and its beliefs to everyone watching BBC outside the UK. They are also regulated to have diversity and different ethnicties in their shows. Also, they are required to inform viewers and give out news.

01 TELEVISION

 We look at current news articles about the BBC and return to the OCR fact sheet on the television industry.  

According to The Times newspaper this week,  watching TV live and in real time accounts for most TV viewing.

1. What do you understand by the terms 'live' content and 'on demand' content?

 On demand content is when the viewer of the show can watch it to their liking, whenever they want. For example, if during the weekend they want to watch a show, they can easily switch on the television and put that show on. In contrast, live content is when the viewer has to come at a specific time to watch the film. For example, a show at 8:00 premieres every single day of the month, an example of this is the AMC show Prison Break.

2. What is the demand for 'live' content like?

 On demand television is a lot more used then live television, this is due to it being more convenient as you can view it in your free time, in contrast to live where you can only watch it at one specific time. 

3. According to ratings research, there are 8 programmes cited as the top live shows for family viewing. How many have you watched?

 I have watched most of them, the one I have watched a lot over the last few years. This appears on the BritBox service, and appears at 9 every day, when it is on. This show is a family focused entertainment, and comedy show. It applies to all age groups and is something the family can watch, and it brings entertainment pleasures for all age groups. This show is one of the biggest British shows consistently over the past few years, but is losing some popularity due to on demand streaming platforms having taken over such as Amazon Prime. This is due to them having a much bigger budget, and it is more convenient to watch.

 4. Apply Blumler and Katz's audience framework to what you learn from this article.

Entertainment - Television shows audiences emotions, and it also lets them be entertained by things such as suspense, and thrill in certain television shows. This is used to engage audiences and make them hooked as possible into the show. An example of this is David Attenborough's show, in the article where he entertains us.

Relationships - you are able to build relationships through programmes with people who have a similar taste to you, it can also result in more family time.

RAPID REVISION

 1. How has technology changed the way people use newspapers?

One way technology has changed the way we use newspapers is that almost all of read our newspapers online. This is due to it being more convenient, as our phone can be used as a portable newspaper. Large broadsheets are very annoying to carry around, whereas with our phone is consistently in our pocket and we never let go of it, making it a lot easier to use daily. Also, you can have interactions with other people who own the newspapers, via social media sites like Twitter or Instagram, where people can drop their comments below. 

Thanks to new technology we can gather news from certain areas promptly and upload them as soon as they happen. This allows them to upload things a lot quicker, which as a result makes them a primary source of news to a lot of audiences. Also, people from the public can contribute with their photos of the news, making them be quicker in producing their news. To add articles are a lot more interactive as since they are online, the public can share their views on the paper. This allows magazines to make improvements on their articles based on the comments, such as making certain areas more specific and precise.

02 NEWSPAPERS

  

If you access The Observer print edition online, you can access added features. What are they?

There are many added features of the Observer online than in hard copies. Firstly, online newspapers give you a bigger variety of news articles to read, whereas in a store it is more likely to be limited.  In addition, Observer users can comment their opinion on the article and current news, making it have higher interactions, and you can also see what other people think. Observer readers online can also see older news articles if needs be, in stores they will be as up to date as possible.  In addition, there are small speech bubbles on the newspaper that you can press on, and it gives you more information about the topic and give you more useful things about the tabloid.

This is The Observer's Twitter page. What do you notice?

The first thing that comes to mind when I see the page is that it has interactions. Despite only having one reply, it should gain more over the coming hours and its where people can interact and spread what they think of the situation. For example, the only reply is talking about how the user agrees schools should be shut down. Also, I notice that The Observer are posting the front page of tomorrow's article, giving it as much publicity as possible to maximise sales.

 This is my picture time frame, which is a concept I can use for my music video. It consists of 14 shots all animated into one video:

01 PROMOTING LEGO MOVIE

 The uses and gratifications relevant to the Lego movie point out four main audience pleasures of the film:

. Diversion

. Entertainment

. Escapism

. Values

In my opinion, the most important pleasures of the Lego movie video game represents escapism. The video game contains more active players because as a gamer you do quests, and you are pointed out as the main character, solving each quest as you go along. Also, there are bonuses such as collecting coins to get upgrades for your character, and the game eventually comes to a finish. You also tackle missions like fights against Lord Business, which is the end goal. In addition, in the LMVG you can change characters and choose one that fits you best, and you can become the character you want to be, which allows them to immerse themselves into the action they want to be in, instead of passively watching. This also allows people to remind themselves of the fun and joy they had watching the film, from the humorous moment from the LMVG, which further adds value.

Another feature as that is a cooperative game. The Lego movie can be played multiplayer, and can possibly build relationships as you can help each other complete quests and missions with each other. Also, you can go through the journey of beating Lord Business together and save the world, which can build relationships.

The LMVG allows us as players to actively engage in this battle against Lord Business, who is the general evil person during the whole LMVG. There is a large range of heroes, and for audiences who may be younger Emmet is a very casual hero which is most likely the most relatable person to choose from. He is someone who is a normal everyday guy who becomes a hero, which can relate to younger audiences, which adds more value to the game. It can also target females as they can turn into Wydlstyle, as female power is very motivating, and it may encourage them to play; this is due to her being in a way superior to the male characters, and that is who females want to become.

The first part of today's session is planning how to take forward our hiphop music videos under lockdown at home. We came to these decisions:

• I approach family members to act as cameraman and discuss suitable filming times outdoors, in the woods. I will only need one family member to help me create my sequence photos, and the optimum time to go out would be when noon begins, to have the best lighting.
• Montage sequences: we start today by making a practice photo in Powerpoint using 'remove background', featuring yourself as performer against a suitable backdrop. I positioned myself to make it create the false image of me walking in the woods, and when I put it into Powerpoint I turned the brightness and contrast on the 'create more of a realistic image'. I chose these backgrounds as it fits the mis en scene of my music video.
• A series of such images could be cut to the beat. Therefore, is the montage sequence likely to go with a 'quiet' (slow) bit of your lyrics or a 'busy' (fast) bit? That decision will affect what you shoot.
  
  
  

  
  
  
  
  

PLANNING MY MUSIC VIDEO

 STATEMENT OF INTENT

I am aiming to create a music video with the song Let You Down by NF.  It will appeal to young teenagers and a hip hop music idea. The song idea I have is just over two minutes long and will contain multiple angles, emotions and locations.

SONG

I have chosen NF - Let You Down, because whilst also being hip hop, it is an emotional song that has a lot of meaning to it. The song relates to young teenagers who are going through a lot, and the song may help them with their problems. Other NF songs are usually targeted at teenagers. The lyrics in the song are about a teenager who is depressed and has disappointed their family.  They have to act like they are fine and happy all of the time. Their goal in life is to make their parents proud. 

NARRATIVE

My music video also has many similarities to the lyrics. I will tell the story of a person (me), who is being bullied at school and has difficulties doing homework, and he has a lot on his mind. This will attract younger teenage audiences as they may have to go through a lot at school as well, which means younger audiences can relate and connect with it. The song will cut between me and the lip syncing behind the green screen. There will be a large range of camera angles used such as drone shots, and person to person interaction shots. There will also be zooms and pans in my music video.

PERFORMANCE

My music video will contain numerous locations such as woods, a house, a schooling area and a green screen. I will include lip syncing in mu music video with me singing into a microphone. This will also include different camera angles using during the performance.

LOCATION

I am going to film across multiple locations. Primarily it will be across the school ground, but I will have to do filming in my local woods to gather some more footage. I will also film some footage outdoors in my local park to have more diversity in my music video in terms of having these different locations.

THE AVENGERS HISTORICAL CONTEXTS PAPER REDO

The avengers 10 mark question

 Explain how historical contexts influenced the portrayal of heroes and villains in television programmes. Refer to The Avengers from 1965 to support your answer. (10 marks)

Historical contexts often influences the portrayal of heroes and villains in television programmes due to the time the programmes were filmed.  This can be seen in the Avengers.  The programme was made during the cold war, and a time where there were many stories about Russian spies. This influenced the portrayal because in a war there are usually heroes and villains depending on the country you are fighting for.   The creators of the avengers wanted to portray the British spies as the heroes of the show, Steed and Peel are shown fighting crime and saving the day, creating a sense of hope for younger kids that Britain will be the heroes of the war, and win it. This means that they are represented as the leaders and the heroes of the film, and they stand above others.

Another way in which historical contexts influenced the portrayal or heroes and villains in The Avengers is in how they portrayed women.   Around this time was when women were protesting for their own rights and would wanting their freedom.   This feminism influenced howPeel was shown in the programme. Emma Peel is the hero, a strong independent woman who was just as good as the men.   It gave women a sense of excitement and hope because they look up to Emma thinking that this is the type of person they want to be.  One time was when Steed comes to her apartment, Emma bosses Steed around and implies to him that she is not doing everything he says.   For example, she tells Steed that the cream for his coffee is in the kitchen. This is very important because it shows Emma having authority over Steed, which is something that women really wanted at the time. This draws the conclusion that Emma is portrayed as a hero for the women showing authority, showing the historical contexts.

MUSIC VIDEO CONCEPT IN DETAIL

MUSIC VIDEO - FINISHED CONCEPT

Establishing shot: My establishing shot will contain my lip syncing to the intro of the song, whilst cutting back and forth to me texting a girl saying 'we need to take a break' signified by the lyrics 'im sorry that I let you down' showing that im not putting any effort in, and that school is my only priority. 

Main idea/overview: I want this video to be of a lonely kid who hasn’t found himself and he needs to find some light at the end of the tunnel. By this I mean that he is going through a lot at school and being bullied, and he goes to the woods to find himself.  I will have some shots of me being made fun of and being bullied at school.  Mid way through the video (roughly) I will visit the Claremont woods. This will represent how small and insignificant my life is. 

After this, there will be a cut scene of me sitting at home doing prep on my laptop and I get a connection error, and out of anger I throw my pen down and I slam my laptop. After this I will seemingly take a break from everything, and try and go away from school work. As the song progresses, I get anger lip syncing which expresses how stressful school is getting, being the sameslow repetitive cycle that it is.

The final shot will consist of the sky cutting back and forth to me lip syncing with a crane shot. But in this instance, the sky is slowly zooming down towards me, and in the final 'let you down' of the song it pans to me with a close up, singing the final words.

THE OBSERVER MAGAZINE

 Q.5 Analyse the representation of gender on the front cover of The Observer. Give two examples from the extract. [5 marks]

This Observer cover primarily focuses on men. One example is that there is a picture of five police men surrounding a police woman. In terms of representation, it symbolises the men as powerful and strong, protecting the women in the middle from danger. Secondly, the skybox shows a story about a dad proudly and lovingly holding his son.  It is an article about Clive James and his son, who suffers from a disorder. This symbolises and represents the strength and love that men have for their children. From this, we can draw the conclusion that men are represented on the front cover as strong and powerful, but also loving and caring at the same time.

How far does the media language on the front cover of The Observer. reflect genre conventions? [15 marks] I have explained terms a bit to guide you!

In your answer, you should:

• analyse the media language, using specific examples 
• make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language reflects generic conventions (= looks like a quality broadsheet front cover) or other areas of the theoretical framework (= meets audience needs) and media contexts (= looks like a typical Observer production, bearing in mind its target audience and its ethos).

The Observer has lots of conventional broadsheet features on its front cover. For example, the first article you see in the central splash is about covid-19, which is probably the most relevant thing currently in the world. This is a feature of a broadsheet as it is hard news and not all bright and colourful like the tabloid conventional features. The Observer front, when you take away the skybox, looks very plain and bland.  This is typical of the olden days, compared to today's 'joy' that you get from tabloid newspapers. The seriff font makes it look very old style, especially in contrast to tabloid's colourful and modern fonts. The main Observer article contains information about Boris Johnson and how he is going to shift the rules about covid as the polls have had a drastic change, and the front picture shows a soldier that was killed a few days ago. Both are serious news articles.  This draws the conclusion that The Observer contains  many conventional broadsheet aspects to it.

This edition of The Observer also has some conventional tabloid features on the front cover. One example of this is having news that covers world events and interesting and exciting stories that hook a reader in. Some examples of this include sports news, celebrity news, and human interest stories about emotion. For example, in the skybox it has the story '20 autumn recipes' which is a typical story for a tabloid.  In addition, there are lots of colours and bursts at you, whereas the skyline has a economic story about covid that people can also read. The Observer also has the same structure of a newspaper to that of a tabloid. One of the reasons for this is because a few years back newspapers used to be double the size of normal papers but were then shrunk to save space and to do less harm to the environment due to wasting paper.

In conclusion, this Observer front cover contains both aspects from a broadsheet and tabloid conventions.  However, I think it has more focus towards a broadsheet, as the tabloid aspect only shows in the skybox and article about the dad and son.

For example, they both have title mastheads that spread from left to right. But one is a punchy as clean font where the other one is a formal seriff font. The mise en scene could not be any more different. For one of them, she is holding an instrument.

In conclusion, there are probably more different then similar. It is clear that they are music magazines because they have central splash, the artist in the main bit, and they are given a name tag. However, they are pushed towards different audiences.

MAGAZINE PREP - WRITE ABOUT REPRESENTATION AND LANGUAGE

For my magazine, I have chosen a June 2020 Queen magazine. The main vibe we are meant to grasp from the central splash is that it is a very dark and a sinister kind of band. In the central splash there is a class font with 'Queen' on it, telling us maybe that they are not a big and fisty rock band. There is also a pull quote saying 'we are special boys',  telling their audience that they are an invincible band that cannot be touched. There is also a triple deck layer of quotes at the bottom right, with celebrities expressing their thoughts on Queen and how hard they work.

The representation of the cover portrays Queen as something other then just a band. They are shown as a mysterious group of people that could be anyone doing anything, like villains in comic books. All their clothes are covered, they are all wearing black eyeliner and the lighting is driven towards their face exposing nothing else. This makes us think as an audience that they are a very stylish and dark band. Their facial expressions are all the same, with them seemingly staring directly at the camera like they are staring into our soul, ready to strike at any point. This further influences their mysterious and clueless vibe. Their positions are fairly similar except the band member at the top seems to overpower the other three in the band, possibly implying that he is the main leader. The main colours are black and white to resemble darkness and maybe power.
